Zynga and Facebook are the latest on the hit-list of the hacktivist group, Anonymous, which has threatened to shut down the two websites in a bid to oppose the gaming giant's decision to layoff 5 percent of its workforce.


A member of the group, donning the trademark Guy Fawkes mask, in a YouTube video said Anonymous was targeting the San Francisco-based company because of “the outrageous treatment of their employees and their actions against many developers”. The hacker group criticised Zynga for laying off its employees in spite of having “billion dollars cash”.
Anonymous further warned of releasing games stolen from Zynga's server, as well as taking down both Facebook and Zynga on November 5 (Guy Fawkes Day).

Finally, the wait is over. Microsoft has announced the availability of its latest Windows 8 OS for users in India and around the world. Starting today, users can access the latest Microsoft OS on a wide range of Windows 8 PCs, ultrabooks, tablets and hybrid devices. Windows 8 will be available in two versions at retail - Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.


Apart from buying from the new range of Windows 8 devices, users can also upgrade their current PCs to Windows 8. From 2nd June 2012 until 31st January 2013, users currently running PCs with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 are qualified to download Windows 8 Pro for an estimated price of Rs. 1,999. Those who wish to buy a DVD to upgrade will have to pay Rs. 3,499. This offer is valid until January 31, 2013. After that the OS is expected to be priced above Rs. 11,000.

The much-awaited Apple iPhone 5 will hit Indian retail shelves on November 2, according to sources close to Apple. So far, pricing has not yet been revealed. In the meanwhile, Apple has introduced local Rupee currency pricing for the iTunes App Store.


Redington India and Ingram Micro have been appointed as the master distributors of the iPhone 5, and will be responsible for providing the device to the two Apple carriers (Aircel and Airtel). Other resellers will also be able to procure the iPhone 5 from the two distributors, and sell it with their own markup.

Google is working to improve its Google Drive and has made it easier for users to access the Drive cloud-storage service on the Chrome browser. Google has rolled out relevant applications of Drive – Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentations – to the Chrome Web Store. These apps, now known as Docs, Sheets and Slides are available on the web store.


Google has enabled one-click access from Chrome for these apps. Users can also access apps such as Drawings, Forms and Script from the web store. Google added that the Docs, Sheets, and Slides will be listed by default on Chrome in the next few weeks.

Skype has announced the launch of an updated version of its current desktop program for Windows and Mac. Dubbed as Skype 6.0, the voice over internet protocol application now features support for signing into the service via Microsoft or Facebook accounts. This means new users may not need a create a Skype account to access the service, as they had to earlier.


Skype's update has a special emphasis on integration with Microsoft products. The update also brings the ability to instant message contacts from Hotmail, Outlook and Windows Live Messenger.

Back in August, Facebook introduced a new layout for its messages in an attempt to make it look more like e-mail. According to a post on the Facebook page of digital marketing agency Interactive Swim, the new layout appears to have now begun rolling out to more users.


Interactive Swim said in its post:
“A new Facebook messaging platform is on the way! Not fully rolled out, we’re special and part of the early release, so here are some details for you. It allows you message anyone in your life (not just FB users) add multiple pictures and emoticons to your messages, and search specific keywords to find recent convos. Look for it to head your way soon.”

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro features a high-resolution (2,560x1600 pixel – 227ppi) Retina Display, made out of an 13.3-inch IPS panel with a viewing angle of 178 degrees, as well as 75 percent less reflection and 29 percent higher contrast than the previous generation. It is just 0.75-inches thick (20% thinner than its predecessor), and weighs in at 1.62 kgs. It ships only with flash storage options, up 8GB of RAM, and up to Intel Core i7 (Ivy Bridge) processors.

Nokia has slashed the price of its Windows Phone 7.5-based Lumia 800 to Rs. 18,867. The smartphone is available at the revised price at online shopping site Saholic. Nokia is also offering a Purity Headset by Monster worth Rs. 5,110 free with the device. Other online retailers such as Flipkart and Tradus, however, are still selling the device at the old price.


The Nokia Lumia 800 had launched earlier this year at an MRP of Rs. 24,999. The Lumia 800 runs on Windows Phone 7.5 (and won't get the Windows Phone 8 upgrade, sadly) and is powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor. It has 512MB of RAM. There is 16GB storage built-in on the Lumia 800, but no memory expansion slot. The device has a 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 800x480 pixels resolution and an 8MP camera with dual LED Flash.

As expected, Apple today unveiled a smaller version of its iPad tablet, dubbed the iPad mini.
The 7.9-inch iPad mini includes a 1,024x768 display, the same as the iPad 2.Pricing starts at $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi version. The 32GB Wi-Fi is $429, while the 64GB will be $529. The Wi-Fi plus cellular versions will be $459 (16GB), $559 (32GB), and $659 (64GB).

Buyers can pre-order the devices starting Oct. 26. The Wi-Fi version will ship on Nov. 2 and the cellular version will ship two weeks later.

Researchers from Philipps University and Leibniz University in Germany examined 13,500 free apps from Google Play and found that about 8 percent contained encryption technology that was vulnerable to "Man in the Middle" (MITM) attacks - where the scammer intercepts data as it travels between the user and its intended target.

India's telecom giant Bharti Airtel has become fourth largest telecom operator in the world in terms of subscribers, according to the Wireless Intelligence ‘Scoreboard’ report. At the end of the quarter ended June 2012, the Company had over 250 million mobile subscribers across its operations, representing 13 percent Y-o-Y growth.


“India’s Bharti Airtel (#4) was the only other member of the top ten to move up the ranking, recording a 13 percent year-on-year rise in connections (to 250 million) and leapfrogging Telefónica to become the world’s fourth-largest operator group in Q2,” says the report.

HSBC on Thursday confirmed that it had suffered a cyber attack that took down several of the bank's websites around the world.

The company was hit by a denial of service attack, which limited access to its websites and online banking services. The attack, however, "did not affect any customer data," HSBC said.


"We are taking appropriate action, working hard to restore service. We are pleased to say that some sites are now back up and running," the bank said. "We are cooperating with the relevant authorities and will cooperate with other organisations that have been similarly affected by such criminal acts."

A new report from the research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics says global smartphone sales have gone past the 1 billion mark – 1.038 billion to be precise – for the first time in the third quarter and the numbers are set to double by 2015-end. The figures translate into one out of every seven people globally carries a smartphone.


"By the third quarter of 2011, we estimate there were 708 million smartphones in use worldwide. After a further year of soaring demand, the number of smartphones in use worldwide reached 1.038 billion units during the third quarter of 2012," Scott Bicheno, a senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, said in a statement.

According to a new report from cyber-security firm Sophos, India has once again been rated as the top spam relaying country in the world, ahead of the U.S., Italy and Saudi Arabia. According to the report, one out of six junk messages that floods users' e-mail inboxes originate from India.


Sophos' third quarter 'Dirty Dozen' report on spam relaying nations discovered that the percentage of global spam originating from India has grown in the third-quarter in a row, and now totals more than 16 percent of all junk e-mails. In the last quarter, India accounted for an 11.4 percent of the total world spam.

A string file in the latest Google Play store update's Android application package hints that the store may come with a built-in malware scanner in the near future.


According to Android Police, the string file has mentions of an “App Check”, along with various menu popups such as “Allow Google to check all apps installed to this device for harmful behavior?" and "Installing this app may harm your device." As a result, it is rumoured that Android devices will be soon have the ability to check out apps before installing, or users get a warning if there's anything suspicious. Android Police speculates the new feature is related to Google's recent takeover of Virus Total.

The Galaxy S III Mini will come with 16GB internal storage and a memory card for expansion. No word yet on the pricing of the S III Mini, but global availability is expected to coincide with the Christmas shopping rush.

The Centre for Railway Information Service (CRIS) has announced a new web application called RailRadar, which allows users to access location of a train on Map and track movements of trains on a real-time basis. The new RailRadar service is considered to be an improved version of the earlier tracking system ‘Spot Your Train’.


The RailRadar application has been jointly developed by CRIS and RailYatri team (Stelling Technologies) and users can access it at  railradar.trainenquiry.com. The app will help users find the exact geographical location of 6,500 passenger trains of the Indian Railways on Google Maps on a real time basis. Users can also access RailRadar service from their mobile phones, via the device's browser.

Now you can send free text messages to your friends via Gmail! Search engine Google on Wednesday started rolling out free SMS service for its Gmail users in India. The service is reportedly also being rolled out for paid e-mail Google Apps customers in India. Google India hasn't officially announced the new initiative yet, however several Gmail users have reported about receiving a notification about the new service.


The message service enables users to send free text messages to mobile phones from their chat windows on Gmail. To send text, users need to add mobile numbers of their contacts in the e-mail address book. The service begins with 50 SMSes credit for every user, with one SMS costing one credit. If you get reply from a mobile phone to your Gmail, 5 credits are added to your account. Maximum credit for SMS is 50.

BGR India, citing multiple sources, claims, “Appleis preparing to launch the iPhone 5 in India on the last Friday of this month, which happens to be October 26”. More than 80,000 users of Google Chrome were affected by an adware after they installed a fake version of Rovio's recently launched Bad Piggies game from the Chrome Web Store. The adware installs a plug-in that shows advertisements when users visit popular sites.


Security company Barracuda Networks, which spotted the fake app, have released a detailed report on the adware. If you give the app permission to “access your data on all websites”, the plug-in can help spammers and cyber criminals gain access of your personal data such as email contacts, credit card information and others.

If you thought that AMD was going to let Intel steal the show at the upcoming Windows 8 launch event, you're in for quite a surprise. AMD has announced a Z-60 APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) that's been tailor made for high-end, performance hungry tablets.


The Z-60, formerly code-named Hondo, combines AMD's x86-based processing with the Radeon end of the graphics into a single chip. The Z-60 is packing in a dual-core 1GHz clock speed along with 80 GPU cores for Radeon HD 6250. AMD claims that the new processor is suitable for tablets as thin as 10mm. The new APU will also include AMD's Start Now technology that allows mobile devices to boot up really fast. There is also 1080p content and HDMI support and lastly, DirectX 11 support.

iBall has announced the launch of a new Android-based smartphone, called Andi 4.3j, featuring dual-SIM and dual batteries. The device has been priced at Rs. 9,499.


The iBall Andi 4.3j runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and is powered by 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor. It has a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen (no word on resolution), 5 MP camera, 2GB internal storage, 512 MB of RAM and microSD card slot that supports additional storage up to 32GB. The device supports 3G, Bluetooth, GPRS and EDGE for connectivity.

Samsung has confirmed it is soon going to launch a smaller version of its latest flagship smartphone, Galaxy S III. While talking to the Korean press, JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communication, said the company is set to launch a 4-inch version of the S III, dubbed as the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini, on October 11 in Germany.


"We'll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S III on the 11th in Germany. There's a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it mini,” says JK Shin.

0 Aakash 2 tablet to be available to students next month

Union minister Kapil Sibal has said the Indian government's ultra low-cost Aakash 2 tablet will be available to students on November 11. The minister further said that the new version of the Aakash tablet PC will come with 1GHz processor, four-hour battery time, capacitive screen and Android 4.0 operating system. According to the minister, the price of the device will brought down to around Rs. 1,500, by conducting manufacturing activities in India.

According to a CyberMedia Research (CMR) report, Micromax has emerged as the leading brand in the India's tablet market, ahead of the international brands such as Apple and Samsung. The report, India Quarterly Media Tablet Market Review - between April and June this year, says Micromax had 18.3 percent share in tablet volume sales, while Samsung stood second with 13.3 per cent. Apple was on the third spot with a market share of 12.3 per cent during the review period.


Micromax’s CEO Deepak Mehrotra says the next quarter would be better, as the company had only one tablet in that review period. “We, at present, have a portfolio of five tablet PCs and the numbers next quarter should be better,” Mehrotra said.

In Angry Birds Star Wars, the birds and pigs alike will take on the personalities of characters from the Star Wars saga. The game will follow the mold of the recently launched Angry Birds Space, with planets from the “Star Wars” universe having their own gravitational fields, and different environmental conditions such as the desert of Tatooine and the freezing cold of Hoth.

This is a steady change in Google’s stance which had till now countered Apple’s ideology for separate apps for tablets and the iPhone with “we have apps that run on both phones and tablets”. However, with the Nexus 7 tablet doing so well, Google wants to sort out the app quality issue that has for long been the lead point in a critics’ attack.

The new programming language is translated into JavaScript so that it can support any browser. 0 1Gbps broadband speed plans coming soon for Indian users: Radius Infratel

Broadband users of nine Indian cities will be soon having access to ultra-fast download speeds up to 1Gbps, says telecom infrastructure firm Radius Infratel. The company expects the high speed broadband will be available for users by mid-2013.


"In the next 6-9 months, world class 1,000 Mbps or 1 Gbps (Gigabits per second) plans will be available in India to residential consumers. On connections like these, the same two hour HD movie will download in 30 seconds," Radius Infratel CEO Rajnish Wahi is quoted as saying. At average broadband speeds, the same content takes more than an hour for full download.

0 Microsoft invite hints Windows Phone 8 launch on October 29

Microsoft has sent out a bunch of invites for an event scheduled to be held in San Francisco on October 29. It is being speculated that Microsoft will officially unveil Windows Phone 8 OS at the event, less than a week after the company officially releases the much-awaited Windows 8 at an event in New York on October 26.


The invite does not reveal a lot of information as it's not really an invite so much as it is a Save The Date. The event, slated to start at 10:00 PST (18:00 BST) in San Francisco, will be having more details about where consumers can get their phones running the company's next-gen mobile OS.
