0 Google's Drive: Better package than the rivals?

Narendra Singh Pannewal | 20:55 |
The cloud storage battles have clearly begun. Microsoft has fired a salvo by making SkyDrive more accessible with fresh additions to the desktop and smartphone app range. The Redmond giant has had this cloud storage service active for quite a few years now,

but didn’t really bother much with it till just recently. Not only the series of apps, but even the space structure has been changed. Till now, every user had 25GB free space, but that has now been chopped to 7GB. We are sure Microsoft knew what Google was coming up with, and tweaked the offering in accordance. However, existing users can still claim a free upgrade to 25GB for a limited time. We did!

0 Lava's Intel-based Xolo X900 tested

Narendra Singh Pannewal | 19:38 |

That statement has summarized the opinion of any number of
engineers and business analysts ever since Intel launched Atom back in 2008. The technically oriented have tended to emphasize the larger die and increased power consumption of the x86 instruction set, while business pundits have claimed Intel would fail by refusing to price its parts competitively and accept the lower margins that resulted.

Intel, meanwhile, went ahead and built a smartphone anyway. That device, the Xolo X900, is what we’re reviewing today. It won’t ship to North America — Intel partnered with Indian manufacturer Lava International to bring the product to that country — but this is no prototype or proof-of-concept vehicle.

0 India asks U.S. to remove objectionable content from Facebook, YouTube

Narendra Singh Pannewal | 00:04 |
The Indian government has asked the US to ensure that India-specific objectionable content are removed from the social networking such as Facebook, Google and YouTube. The government also wants these service providers to set up servers in India to order to regulate the content locally.

According to a Hindustan Times report, India conveyed its concerns to visiting S deputy secretary for homeland security Jane Holl Lute. The visiting envoy was told that the U.S. should have an operating procedure that will help authorities to remove the objectionable content within a specific time period or instantaneously depending upon the situation.

It's learnt that this is not the first time the Indian government had made attempts to regulator content via a local server. Earlier this year, Research in Motion (RIM) set up an India-dedicated server, allowing the government full access to messages from BlackBerry’s popular messaging service BBM. The government has previously made attempts to get access to Yahoo and Gmail chatting/e-mails.

The development comes at a time when the Internet companies are locked in a web censorship. Social sites such as Facebook are facing trial in India for allegedly hosting objectionable content. A Delhi court recently ordered issuing summons to Facebook via e-mail after the U.S-based social networking company didn't show up in the court despite several summons issued against it.

0 BlackBerry Curve 9220

Narendra Singh Pannewal | 00:01 | |
If you just have to get a BlackBerry device because of their BBM and Email goodness, want something with the latest OS, and can only budget for about Rs 10,000, this has to be the device you buy. If all you want is BBM and you aren't app crazy, stick with the Curve 8520. If you want GPS and 3G on a budget, get the Curve 3G 9300. You will have to spend a little over Rs. 17,000 on the Curve 9360 if you want BB OS 7 and the latest features

As someone using it after a Curve 9360, it’s certainly a step backwards – it’s irritatingly fatter, but not 9K worth of irritation, which is how much cheaper it is than the 9360. The BlackBerry Curve 9220 is a tiny bit slimmer than the 8520 and 9300, and has actual buttons for Call, Menu, Return and End Call keys, but that’s about it in the looks department.

The only immediate difference you will notice is on the top of the phone, where the media keys are now replaced with a single key to lock the phone. Now, I know many people will think, “Wow, no shortcut to media, or quick pause function, that sucks”. Believe me, as someone who comes from a family of 8520/9300 owners, those stupid rubber keys on the top just crumble and break after about a year or two of use, and then you find yourself running back and forth trying to get them replaced. This is a step up if you ask me, and if you happen to be one of the 6 people on Earth who bought a BlackBerry solely for music and media, just change what the side keys do through the OS, under the Convenience Keys setting.
The convenience key on the left actually proclaims “BBM”, but don’t worry you can change it to something else. You won’t, of course, because that’s exactly what you’d buy this phone for, but it’s good to know that it can be done.

Only when you open the battery cover do you realise the differences from the 8520 and 9300. To start with, just when you’ve gotten used to one way of prying a Curve open (just lift the cover at the notch provided), RIM goes and changes it to a slide downwards to open motion – a very minor irritant that disappears as soon as you see that big beautiful battery underneath. The battery takes up the whole space in the back, and thus the memory card slot is moved from beside the battery (all previous Curves) to above it near the camera. It’s angled slightly outwards as well, so as to aid in easy removal. More about that beautiful battery to come...

0 DataWind to integrate GetJar app store in Aakash tablet

Narendra Singh Pannewal | 23:58 |
An app store was definitely a missing feature in the ultra low-cost Aakash tablet. But now the makers of the world's cheapest tablet, DataWind, have filled the gap by incorporating a GetJar app store that features more than 350,000 free applications.

“GetJar is an established partner with a very large selection of free applications that users can download onto their UbiSlate or Aakash tablets. We’re excited by the added value this brings to our end users,” says DataWind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli, while announcing partnership with GetJar.

DataWind's partnership with GetJar will definitely bring more value to the upgraded Aakash tablet, which will be coming out with better specifications such as better processor and a capacitive touchscreen at the same price of the original Aakash tablet. The Aakash tablet is slated to receive a major hardware upgrade - dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, and the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS later this year.
“Low-cost tablets open the capabilities of applications and the Internet for millions of people. We are happy to help Datawind make free applications and our GetJar Gold program available to these new tablet customers,” Chris Dury, GetJar’s CEO adds.

DataWind is currently going through a tough phase as it finds itself embroiled in a spate of controversies. The Canadian company has already been criticised for its public tiff with IIT Rajasthan and its ex-vendor Quad Electronics. DataWind recently sued the Indian Cellular Association for making defamatory comments.
That being said, DataWind is still the vendor for the Aakash tablet. The company is hopeful it will start supplying the tablets to the government later this month.

The Aakash tablet project has been hit by a spate of snags since it was unveiled in October last year. The first lot of tablets supplied by DataWind was discarded by the government over poor specifications. The Canadian company will be providing an upgraded Aakash at same price of original device. Meanwhile, the government plans to open a new tender for the Aakash tablet and wants to rope in state-run bodies to push the project with escalating cos

0 Thousands may lose Internet in July

Narendra Singh Pannewal | 22:06 |

For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the difference between staying online and losing Internet connections this summer.

Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut down.

The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by its security partner, http://www.dcwg.org , that will inform them whether they're infected and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, infected users won't be able to connect to the Internet.

Most victims don't even know their computers have been infected, although the malicious software probably has slowed their web surfing and disabled their antivirus software, making their machines more vulnerable to other problems.

Last November, the FBI and other authorities were preparing to take down a hacker ring that had been running an Internet ad scam on a massive network of infected computers.

This is what happened:

Hackers infected a network of probably more than 570,000 computers worldwide. They took advantage of vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Windows operating system to install malicious software on the victim computers. This turned off antivirus updates and changed the way the computers reconcile website addresses behind the scenes on the Internet's domain name system.

The DNS system is a network of servers that translates a web address - such as gadgets.ndtv.com - into the numerical addresses that computers use. Victim computers were reprogrammed to use rogue DNS servers owned by the attackers. This allowed the attackers to redirect computers to fraudulent versions of any website.

The hackers earned profits from advertisements that appeared on websites that victims were tricked into visiting. The scam netted the hackers at least $14 million, according to the FBI. It also made thousands of computers reliant on the rogue servers for their Internet browsing.

When the FBI and others arrested six Estonians last November, the agency replaced the rogue servers with Vixie's clean ones. Installing and running the two substitute servers for eight months is costing the federal government about $87,000.

The number of victims is hard to pinpoint, but the FBI believes that on the day of the arrests, at least 568,000 unique Internet addresses were using the rogue servers. Five months later, FBI estimates that the number is down to at least 360,000. The U.S. has the most, about 85,000, federal authorities said. Other countries with more than 20,000 each include Italy, India, England and Germany. Smaller numbers are online in Spain, France, Canada, China and Mexico.

Vixie said most of the victims are probably individual home users, rather than corporations that have technology staffs who routinely check the computers.

FBI officials said they organized an unusual system to avoid any appearance of government intrusion into the Internet or private computers. And while this is the first time the FBI used it, it won't be the last.

"This is the future of what we will be doing," said Eric Strom, a unit chief in the FBI's Cyber Division. "Until there is a change in legal system, both inside and outside the United States, to get up to speed with the cyber problem, we will have to go down these paths, trail-blazing if you will, on these types of investigations."

Now, he said, every time the agency gets near the end of a cyber case, "we get to the point where we say, how are we going to do this, how are we going to clean the system" without creating a bigger mess than before.
