DataWind and the United Nations Office for Partnerships in coordination with the other international bodies have announced a ‘Global Apps to Empower’ competition.
Under the competition, the app developers have to create apps that encourage women's empowerment in various sectors including jobs and entrepreneurship, education and conflict resolution. Winning apps will be receive cash prizes and the opportunity to have their apps listed in DataWind’s Ubislate educational tablet, the commercial version of the Aakash tablet.

NASA and Foursquare launch new Curiosity Rover-themed badgesNASA has teamed up with Foursquare to introduce Curiosity rover-themed badges. Users can earn these badges by checking into science-related destinations frequently.

Users must like NASA on Foursquare to earn the Curiosity Explorer badge, and check in at a NASA visitor center or other places categorized as a science museum or planetarium.

The launch of the badge comes after the October check-in on Mars by NASA’s Curiosity rover, which was dubbed as the first check-in on another planet. Since landing on the planet in August, the Curiosity rover has been extensively promoted on social media, especially Twitter and Facebook.

Japanese firm develops 'smart' toilet that can be controlled via appThe idea of home appliances and utilities being controlled by smartphones is not new, but a Japanese firm called Lixil might have taken things too far, developing an advanced toilet model that can be controlled by a smartphone.

Users can control the toilet by a smartphone app called 'My Satis', which can also track user's bowel movements to assess their health.
The app, available for select Android smartphones, is compatible with three of the company's new range lavaroties.

Finally, the wait is over. Microsoft has announced the availability of its latest Windows 8 OS for users in India and around the world. Starting today, users can access the latest Microsoft OS on a wide range of Windows 8 PCs, ultrabooks, tablets and hybrid devices. Windows 8 will be available in two versions at retail - Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.


Apart from buying from the new range of Windows 8 devices, users can also upgrade their current PCs to Windows 8. From 2nd June 2012 until 31st January 2013, users currently running PCs with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 are qualified to download Windows 8 Pro for an estimated price of Rs. 1,999. Those who wish to buy a DVD to upgrade will have to pay Rs. 3,499. This offer is valid until January 31, 2013. After that the OS is expected to be priced above Rs. 11,000.

Skype has announced the launch of an updated version of its current desktop program for Windows and Mac. Dubbed as Skype 6.0, the voice over internet protocol application now features support for signing into the service via Microsoft or Facebook accounts. This means new users may not need a create a Skype account to access the service, as they had to earlier.


Skype's update has a special emphasis on integration with Microsoft products. The update also brings the ability to instant message contacts from Hotmail, Outlook and Windows Live Messenger.

0 Google working on built-in malware scanner for Android devices

A string file in the latest Google Play store update's Android application package hints that the store may come with a built-in malware scanner in the near future.


According to Android Police, the string file has mentions of an “App Check”, along with various menu popups such as “Allow Google to check all apps installed to this device for harmful behavior?" and "Installing this app may harm your device." As a result, it is rumoured that Android devices will be soon have the ability to check out apps before installing, or users get a warning if there's anything suspicious. Android Police speculates the new feature is related to Google's recent takeover of Virus Total.
